Standards of the Expansion Joint Manufacturers Association, Inc. & Practical Guide to Expansion Joints

The Expansion Joint Manufacturers Association, Inc. (EJMA) is an organization of the leading international manufacturers of metal bellows expansion joints. The organization is dedicated to the advancement of expansion joints through cooperative empirical and analytical programs.

Since 1958 this organization has published the Standards which detail the correct application, method of analysis, safety standards and manufacturing tolerances of metal bellows expansion joints. This document has become the internationally accepted authority for expansion joints.

As an aid to the basic understanding of expansion joints the EJMA publishes the Practical Guide to Expansion Joints. This document explains how metal bellows expansion joints function, correct applications, and handling, installation and safety standards.

Hyspan is a member of the EJMA, and all Hyspan products comply with the Standards.

Bellows Movements Technical Notes

Hyspan Technical Notes that explain the axial, lateral and angular movement of metal bellows, and the mathematical relationship between the three movements.

Pressure Thrust Technical Notes

Hyspan Technical Notes that explain the force that results from pressure in a product/system that incorporates a metal bellows.

Technical Notes for Metal Bellows Expansion Joints and Packed Expansion Joints

Hyspan technical notes used for sales representative training that explain and illustrate the basic principles, applications, functions, movements and types of expansion joints – Index .

Thermal Expansion of Materials

Tabulated values of thermal expansion (or contraction) from 70°F measured in inches/100 feet corresponding to listed temperatures for commonly used materials. Primarily used to determine the expansion of pipe and tubing.  Temperatures range from cryogenic to elevated value

Hyspan Barco Ball Joint Applications

Illustrations of commonly used ball joint installations and recommended design practices. Methods for calculating the flex angle, and the forces and moments on the system.

Summary Test Report, Ball Joint Life Cycle

A Hyspan Barco Ball Joint designed for heat transfer oil piping of parabolic trough solar collectors was life cycled tested at the pressure, temperature and motion conditions simulating 30 years of service. Report summarizes the results.

Leg Length Calculation of Ball Joint Scissor Arrangement
